Nestled in a vibrant, eclectic neighbourhood in south London, this semi-detached Victorian house needed a whole-house refurbishment. Sprawling across seven semi-levels, the house was a maze of small, dark and separate rooms. Our mission? Transform this period piece into a home for a young family of four, giving it some fun, funk, and flow. With renovation of every floor level and a major structural redesign of the ground floor, we transformed this into a forever home.
We were asked to undertake a full-scale refurbishment, creating a new layout for every floor of the home that would be more fluid, open and suitable for modern family life. The reimagined space was refurbished with a highly energy-efficient heating system including solar panels and an air source heat pump, well-ventilated rooms with double-glazing throughout and moments of fun in each floor level to bring joy up into the house.
The project intentionally worked with a limited palette of materials to ensure good detailing and consistency throughout. This was restricted to light oak, bold colours and Plykea panels that have different colour laminate options with exposed plywood edges. This palette means we were able to innovate on every floor level giving a unique colour and character to the different spaces but keeping a rigour in the materiality and detailing.
The ground floor is the most dynamic and innovative of all the spaces because it connects five previous rooms into one single space that is divided through small steps, carefully considered nooks and concealed storage. The family can enjoy being together without being on top of each other!
