a reading room

This is a large detached house with a south facing garden. Its heritage as a demonstration home means the property has a unique character, not conforming to the average Victorian prototype. Every room is slightly different, and its construction technology boasts variations in detailing that illustrate the craftsmanship of construction in the late 19th century.

There was a particularly unsympathetic conservatory, probably built in the 1980s, that was not insulated properly and covered a kitchen window. Our proposal demolished the conservatory and replaced it with a reading room that looks into the garden. The new room is for reading, working, drinking coffee and to write fiction novels.

Since the house is so unique, it would have been foolish to mimic the original architecture and design. Instead, the reading room is a fully glazed, modern extension, proudly different from the original house. This new extension is a contemporary addition adding a new layer of originality to the house and providing a much needed working space that maximises the garden view.
