This is a home renovation for a family of four. They currently live in an end of terrace house and whilst not in a Conservation Area, the street has a beautiful butterfly hip roofline along its entirety. Although the family was in need of more space, an early decision was made not to interfere with the roof and, instead, to change the circulation throughout the ground and first floor to accommodate the changing needs of this growing family.
The renovation includes a new rear extension that is subservient to the original house in terms of its proportions. From a style perspective the Victorian vernacular is maintained throughout the front. However, it is contrasted with a clean, modern extension at the rear that attracts light and maximizes the potential of the rear views into a newly created ‘urban oasis’. The entire ground floor has been demolished and the circulation is being changed to flood the entire space with natural daylight.
