This is a full house renovation of a mid-century townhouse in Dulwich. The house is within a well-kept cul-de sac that is part of the Dulwich Estate. The houses are built of red exposed brick with white timber paneling on certain façade areas. This aesthetic, together with the lush natural green area that surrounds it, gives the house a very Scandinavian feeling.

The refurbishment of this house is a careful balance of bringing practicality and modernity to a family that needs space, light and function whilst managing the expectations of the Dulwich Estate that is steeped in history and preserves its housing stock with great care. The majority of exemplar housing in the Dulwich Estate was designed by Architects Austin Vernon & Partners in the mid 1960s, so they are interesting spaces to work with. A good review of the Dulwich estate housing was written by the Dulwich Society (http://www.dulwichsociety.com/newsletters/52-winter-2003/64-sixties-architecture).
